The Waters House

In the late nineteenth century the Waters family bought land at Germantown, Maryland and built a farmhouse. They were among the wealthier families in the area and relatives lived in the house with them.

The account holds that one of those relatives, out of jealousy, went to the master bedroom one night and killed both owners.

No record has been found for it, and a double killing in a prominent Montgomery County family would have left one, so it should be read as a story the house has carried rather than as history.

The farmhouse survived the transformation of this part of Maryland from farmland into suburb, which is the more remarkable fact about it. Almost nothing else from that landscape did.

It is now a local history centre and is open to visitors.
