This house at Cape May, New Jersey was built in 1863 for Captain George Allen, and the woman reported in it is understood to be Esther, his niece.

She is described as well dressed, and she wears a strong perfume that people smell before they see anything.

Guests have heard her laughing and seen her dancing through the house.

The owners have their own accounts.

This is one of the very few entries in the collection where the reports are of somebody enjoying themselves. There is no death in the story, no violence and no grievance, only a young woman who liked the house and appears to be still in it.

Cape May was already a fashionable resort when this house went up, and the Allens were exactly the sort of family who summered here.

The mansion has been restored and takes guests.
