City College of New York has been producing accounts from Shepherd Hall since the 1920s, and what makes them unusual is the recognition.

The figures reported in one of the former political club lounges were identified by other students, and by professors, as men who had studied there and had been killed in the First World War.

The story most often repeated concerns a mathematics tutor who noticed that a student's clothes seemed somewhat dated for the period.

City College sent an enormous number of young men to that war. It was the free college of New York, and its students were largely the children of immigrants who had no other route into higher education. The political clubs were where they argued about the war before they went to it.

Shepherd Hall is a landmark building and the campus is in use.
