The Bush House at Index, Washington was built in 1889 for the miners coming into the valley.

Around the turn of the century a young woman named Annabel came to Index to be married. Her intended worked in the mines.

There was an explosion, and word came down the valley to her.

What she did then is what the inn remembers her for.

Index sits in a narrow valley under Mount Index in the Cascades, and the mines and quarries here killed men regularly. Word travelled down the valley on foot or by rail, and a woman waiting at a hotel would have heard it from whoever arrived first.

The town today has a few hundred residents and the mountains directly overhead.

The inn has been closed and reopened more than once over the years.
