George W Vanderbilt died in 1914 of complications following surgery for appendicitis. His wife was devastated.

What she did afterwards is the origin of everything reported at Biltmore since. Late at night she would sit in the library, in front of the great marble fireplace, and talk to George. He was not there. The servants began to think she was losing her reason.

The estate at Asheville, North Carolina is open to the public and among the most visited houses in America, which means the accounts come from staff and from paying visitors in daylight as often as from anyone at night. Her voice is still reported in the library, described as very soft, as though she is in the middle of a conversation.

His presence is described in the billiard room and in the second floor oak sitting room, which were among the rooms he used most.

Of all the accounts in this archive, this one is the least frightening and among the saddest. A widow talked to her husband in an empty room, and the house kept the habit.
