The tour guides at the Akron Civic Theatre still tell the story of Fred the caretaker.

Fred worked here his entire life, in the days when the building was the Loew's. He died on the premises.

He still attends to his duties, and the duty everyone mentions is keeping vandals out of the lavatories, which is both the least glamorous and the most convincing detail in this entry. Nobody inventing a ghost gives it that job.

The theatre itself is one of the last atmospheric picture palaces in the country, built in 1929 with a Moorish courtyard, a ceiling of drifting clouds and stars that come out during the film. There are only a handful left.

A man who spent forty years keeping such a building in order, and is described still doing it, is an entirely fitting result.

The theatre is restored, open, and worth going inside for the ceiling alone.
