Starvation Heights

This is not folklore. Dr Linda Burfield Hazzard ran a sanitarium at Olalla in Washington state in the early 1900s, on the theory that any disease could be cured by fasting: weeks, and in some cases months, without food.

Patients came to her, and patients died. Some of them died weighing under fifty pounds. She was in a position to draft wills and to take control of the estates of people too weak to object, and she did.

In 1912 she was convicted of manslaughter over the death of Claire Williamson, a British woman who had come to her for treatment. Her medical licence was revoked. When she was released she went back to Olalla and carried on.

Local accounts hold that she buried the dead on the grounds and planted a tree over each one.

Hazzard herself died in 1938, attempting one of her own fasting cures.

The site is private land above Olalla, and the hill has been known as Starvation Heights ever since.
