Sauer Castle in Kansas City, Kansas is on the historic register and is among the most photographed private houses in the state.

The story attached holds that the owner left his wife to fight in the Civil War. Toward the end of it she received a letter saying he would arrive on a particular ferry and asking her to wait for him at the landing. She went down to the river. When the last passenger came off the boat and it was not him, she concluded he was dead, went home, and hanged herself from what people call the bell tower.

The house does not have a bell tower in the way the story requires, and the suicide does not appear in the record of the family who built it. Anton Sauer built the house after the war for reasons that had nothing to do with any of this, and the legend appears to have grown up around a distinctive silhouette on a hill.

The house is private property, has been fenced and posted for decades, and the owners have prosecuted trespassers. It is a house, not an attraction.
