Omaha South High School in Nebraska has a presence students call Gus, and the setting is the more interesting half of it.

Beneath the performing arts wing is a section of the building that pupils have long called the Catacombs. It was built in the 1950s, at the same time as the wing above it, and it was designed as a nuclear fallout shelter. That is what a school basement was for in Omaha in that decade.

The account concerns a tornado drill twenty or twenty five years before it was collected, during which the whole school went down into the Catacombs, as the drill required.

Gus was the caretaker for the performing arts part of the building.

What happened during that drill is where the story starts, and the versions students tell diverge sharply from there. No death has been confirmed from any record, and the name is now attached to the space rather than to any documented person.

The Catacombs are real, and generations of pupils have been marched down into them.
