The version most often given is that on Saint Patrick's Day, in 1968 or 1969, the cheerleading squad and their coaches were killed in an aircraft accident at the regional airport, returning home.

Earlier tellings had it as the football coach and team, which is a good illustration of how details shift even around a real event within living memory.
