He lost his balance and fell, striking the man below him.

It did not break his fall. He was killed instantly, of a broken neck.

This is the sixth or seventh account in this collection of somebody killed working above a school stage, and the consistency is not folklore. Changing lamps over an auditorium stage is done from a ladder or a catwalk, by one man, usually out of hours, with a hard floor underneath.

The detail about the second man is what makes this one particular. He was there, holding the ladder, doing exactly what he was supposed to do.
