An old house stands in Lake Charles, Louisiana among torn down trees. It is wrecked, and nobody has bothered to demolish it.

Two are described. One is inside the house, and one is outside it, and the accounts keep them separate.

Inside there are boxes, ladders and cans of paint, set out as though somebody was about to begin work and never did.

That image is the whole of the entry. A house left mid repair says more than a ruin does, because a ruin is finished and this is not. Somebody bought the materials, carried them in, and then stopped.

Lake Charles has been hit repeatedly by hurricanes, most severely in 2020 when two made landfall within six weeks, and a great many houses in this city were abandoned partway through being put right.
