The old county home and infirmary at Bethany, New York was a poor farm and an asylum, and more than a thousand deaths on the property are documented.

That number is the entry. A county poor farm took in everyone the nineteenth century had no other answer for: the destitute, the elderly with no family, the mentally ill, unmarried mothers, the disabled and the simply unlucky. Residents worked the farm to pay for their own keep. Most who died there were buried on the grounds.

What owners and visitors report is doors slamming, voices, and objects moved.

The site has been worked over heavily by investigators and psychics, and a great deal of what circulates about it comes from that rather than from the people who lived and worked there. The documented mortality record is the part that stands without any of it.
