Sailors' Snug Harbor opened in 1833 as the world's first home for "aged, decrepit and worn-out sailors" – a magnificent row of Greek temple fronts facing the Kill van Kull on Staten Island's north shore, where thousands of old salts lived and died; hundreds lie in the institution's own cemetery. Darkest is the tale of the Matron's Cottage: according to the story, which today's cultural center itself stages on its ghost tours, an 1860s matron kept her mentally disabled son locked and chained in the basement – until in 1863 he broke free and stabbed her to death, then met the vengeance of a mob. In the house, doors slam, objects shift, and chains are heard rattling from the cellar. In the great halls and the tunnels between buildings, thin sea shanties and heavy footsteps are said to sound as museum and theater staff close for the night.
