At Willets Point in northeastern Queens, construction of the granite fortress on Long Island Sound began in 1862 to seal the sea approach to New York – to plans attributed to engineer captain Robert E. Lee, drawn before he chose the Confederacy. Its guns never fired in anger, but garrison life claimed its dead through typhoid, cholera and accidents, and the fort long served as a military hospital. Park rangers and visitors to the now-open water battery tell of echoing boot steps in empty casemates, coughing and murmurs from dark vaults, and a soldier in blue glimpsed at tunnel mouths before walking straight into the stone wall. Urban explorers of the sealed underground passages report flashlights dying in unison and the sense of a sentry who never left his post.
