This theatre stands at the far northern end of Bakersfield, California, in Oildale, a community that grew directly out of the oil fields.

The building was put up in the early 1970s as a toy shop. The owner went bankrupt around 1975, having lost everything he had trying to keep the business open.

He is who the building is associated with.

This is one of the few sites in this archive attached to no violence and no disaster, only to a man who failed at something and could not let go of it. That is a more common human experience than any of the others in this collection, and it is almost never what a ghost story is about.

Oildale itself is worth a note. It grew from the Kern River field, one of the largest oil discoveries in California, and it has been a working town of derricks and pumpjacks for over a century.
