In 2000 this school at Clearwater, Florida was to undergo major interior renovations.

Once the plans were announced, the night caretakers began reporting banging in the empty building, and a small boy in a baseball uniform running past them.

It escalated to the point that a number of them would not work the night shift at all, which is a real consequence rather than a story: a school district had a staffing problem.

A tape recorder was brought in.

The timing is the part worth noting. Reports beginning when a building is about to be altered, and concentrating during the works, is a well recognised pattern in this field, and it has been observed often enough to have a name. What causes it is another question. Building work also produces noise, dust, air movement, and changes to how sound travels through a structure.

The school is in use.
