The Begjaine house

This old house on Long Island has been reported for over two hundred years, and the family it is named for arrived in 1778.

Mr Begjaine was killed at Fort Ticonderoga. His widow moved herself and their three children to a house at Hauppauge.

Shortly after they moved in, a man with an English accent came to the front door, saying he had things to sell.

What happened next is the account.

Long Island spent the entire Revolution under British occupation. After the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776 the island was held by the Crown until the end of the war, and the families living there dealt with soldiers, foraging parties and informers for seven years. An Englishman at the door in 1778 was not a neutral event.

The house is private property.
