Xinhai Tunnel in Taipei, opened in 1972, was bored through a hill of old burial grounds and exits beside the city's funeral parlour and crematorium – a setting that has made it Taiwan's most storied tunnel. The classic legend tells of taxi drivers who pick up a long-haired woman at night asking for the far side of the tunnel; she vanishes from the back seat, or pays with notes that by dawn turn out to be spirit money, while the "house" she was dropped at stands in a graveyard. Others get caught in a "ghost wall", driving for hours without finding the exit of the barely five-hundred-metre tunnel. Sceptics blame the yellowish lighting and the sharp bends at the portals – yet many still choose another route after dark.
