The Royal Rattanakosin Hotel on Ratchadamnoen Avenue became a makeshift field hospital when the military opened fire on pro-democracy protesters on 14 October 1973, and the dead and dying were carried into its lobby. Ever since, guests and staff have described faceless figures in the hallways, knocking on doors with no one outside, and lifts stopping at floors where nobody is waiting. The hotel stands between the Democracy Monument and Sanam Luang, both wrapped in execution and cremation lore of their own. The venerable hotel remains open — though some rooms are said to be hard to let.
