Sweden is full of historic hotels where guests have checked in — and some of them seem never to have quite left. From unhappy brides and dark secrets to shadow figures and unexplained sounds, these nine hotels carry reputations for the supernatural. Would you dare stay the night?

1. Hotell Stenkullen, Norrköping — shadows in the night

Just north of Norrköping, right beside the E4 motorway, stands Stenkullens Värdshus, a hotel where time seems to have stopped. The imposing building from 1858, once an exclusive summer villa for the snuff manufacturer Erik Swartz, carries a long history of both luxury and darker stories. Its Italian-inspired architecture, with white façades, arches and a garden with a water-lily pond, gives a romantic impression — but the place also has a reputation for being haunted.

Since the hotel opened in the 1950s, guests and staff have reported countless strange experiences. Guests have woken to find a tall, dark-clad figure standing at the foot of the bed, staring down at them before suddenly vanishing. Others have felt an invisible presence in the room, cold air sweeping over them, and a strong sense of being watched.

Footsteps are often heard in the corridors although no one is visible. Cleaners describe doors opening and closing by themselves, objects moving without explanation, and an unseen force setting chandeliers swaying. The hotel's owner, Maria Svensson, has lived there since childhood and has witnessed several unexplained events herself.

Stenkullen's secluded position makes it more unsettling still at night. The motorway, which cut the grounds in two in the 1960s, has left the hotel standing as an isolated time capsule. The 2022 SVT documentary Mitt livs hotell brought further attention to its atmosphere.

2. Hotell Eggers, Gothenburg — Mrs Eggers refuses to leave

Gothenburg's oldest hotel is said to be inhabited by none other than its former proprietress, Ebba Eggers. Cleaners have encountered a white-haired lady who vanished into thin air, guests have woken to whispering, and some have felt unseen hands touch them. Paranormal investigators have recorded unexplained phenomena — something seems to keep a watchful eye on the hotel.

3. Grand Hotell, Helsingborg — a tragic love story

In the 1920s an unhappy love affair played out at the Grand Hotell in Helsingborg. A mistress was murdered and disappeared without trace, but her spirit is said to have remained. Guests in room 585 have woken to cold winds and felt themselves pushed out of bed. Curtains move with no draught, and lamps switch on and off on their own.

4. Grand Hotell, Lysekil — the white lady searching for her love

A tragic wedding night became the beginning of a legend at the Grand Hotell in Lysekil. The bride, who died unexpectedly, is said to still walk the hotel's corridors in search of her husband. Guests have heard weeping and seen a white figure drift through the rooms. Switching on the light, they have found the room empty — but felt a strange cold in the air.

5. Furunäset, Piteå — the hospital where souls linger

Furunäset, once a psychiatric hospital, is now a hotel — but some of its former patients seem never to have checked out. Guests have heard the sound of hospital beds rolling, seen shadows in the corridors and felt watched by unseen eyes. The best-known apparition is a nurse who still seems to keep vigil over her patients.

6. Vadstena Klosterhotell — the nuns of the past

This former convent in Vadstena is a peaceful place, but its ghost stories leave many guests sleeping uneasily. The weeping nun is said to be a woman forced into convent life, whose grief still echoes through the corridors. Doors open and close by themselves, shadow figures appear at the edge of vision, and some have heard whispers in the night.

7. Grand Hôtel, Stockholm — the dancing lady

In the ballroom of the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, guests have seen the figure of a woman in a nineteenth-century gown. The dancing lady is said to have been a society woman who loved the balls so much that she never quite left them. Piano music is heard from empty rooms, and guests have felt a presence beside them — as though someone were still waiting for a dance.

8. Stadshotellet, Åmål — the bride who never had her wedding night

A bride in white is said to haunt the Stadshotellet in Åmål, searching for her lost love. Guests have woken to a woman weeping in the dark, and one guest saw a white figure drift through the room before disappearing through the wall. Many also describe a sudden cold in certain rooms, as though someone unseen were present.

9. Hotell Statt, Söderhamn — the girl in the attic

At Hotell Statt in Söderhamn a young servant girl is said to have died in mysterious circumstances. Her spirit has been seen walking through the hotel, and some guests have heard a child crying from the attic. One night a guest woke to the sound of steps in the corridor, but when he opened the door it was empty — apart from a faint scent of old-fashioned perfume.
