In the middle of Jackson Square rises St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest continuously operating Catholic cathedral in the United States. The present building was consecrated in 1794, after earlier churches had burned in the city's great fires. Behind it lies a quiet garden named after Père Antoine, a Spanish priest who served the parish for over forty years. When he died in 1829, the whole of New Orleans is said to have halted in mourning.

It is him that folklore has encountered here. At sunrise Père Antoine is said still to walk in the garden and along the narrow alley that bears his name, book in hand.
