What became of her is unclear, but according to legend she died there, bitter and full of hatred. Her spirit is said to haunt the castle to this day — and particularly its male guests.

She has been seen on the main staircase, standing still and watching the castle's visitors. Sometimes she appears at the entrance door or glides through the ground-floor corridors. Some claim to have seen her crossing the courtyard under cover of darkness.

A head of housekeeping at the castle once recounted seeing the Lady in Black several times. On one of those occasions the dark-clad figure stood watching her as she spoke with a colleague — but when she blinked, the figure was gone.

Södertuna Castle is today a hotel and conference venue, and guests can still book rooms in the old building. The management does not reveal which room is said to be the most haunted — perhaps so as not to frighten guests away.
