By the still waters of Lake Vidöstern in Småland stands Toftaholm Manor, an idyllic place with roots in the 1400s. But behind the handsome façades and the calm surroundings lies a darker history: a story of forbidden love, despair, and a spirit that never found rest.

A love that ended in tragedy

According to legend it was here at the manor that a young farm boy named Matts fell in love with the baron's daughter. The two dreamed of a life together, but the baron regarded their love as a disgrace. He had already chosen another man for his daughter — an older landowner, wealthy and powerful.

Despite pleading and secret meetings, the baron's decision could not be changed. On the morning of the wedding, the day his beloved would be forced to say yes to another man, Matts took his own life. He hanged himself in room 324 — and his soul is said to have remained there ever since.

Room 324

Guests who have stayed in room 324 describe unexplained phenomena. Doors and windows left open in the evening are found closed in the morning. Faint sighs are sometimes heard in the room, as though someone were weeping in the dark. Others describe an uncomfortable presence, as if someone unseen were watching them.

Matts does not seem malevolent, only sorrowful. According to the staff he is a restless soul still searching for the love he lost.
