Sandträsk Sanatorium — light, air, and the silence that remains

It begins with a road winding through the forest. The pines stand close. The air is clear, almost unreally clean. Exactly as it was once meant to be.

Here, in the Edefors district outside Boden, one of northern Sweden's largest sanatoriums was raised in 1913. A place built on hope — and on the idea that nature itself could heal what was otherwise fatal.

Those struck by tuberculosis were sent here. Those who coughed blood. Those who no longer had a place in healthy society. Here they would rest, breathe, wait. And perhaps survive.

Light and air

The architecture was bright. The windows large. Everything was carefully designed to let in as much sunlight and fresh air as possible — a contrast to the disease slowly eating its way into the bodies inside.

But behind the open spaces was another reality. A secluded world. A small society of its own where time moved differently, where days became weeks, weeks became months — and for many, an ending.

Thousands of people passed through these wards. Not all of them left.

When the sanatorium finally closed in 1964, medicine had moved on. Penicillin took over where nature had once been asked to carry the responsibility. But the building remained.

The accounts

In Spökkartan's interview with the ghost hunter Matti, it is Sandträsk that stands out as the most memorable place he has visited. He describes how the group spent the night in old hospital beds inside the sanatorium, and how the night was marked by sounds, shadows and a heavy, oppressive atmosphere.

Similar accounts recur from others who have been on site: steps in corridors where no one walks, doors that move, the sense of not being alone in a room. It is the classic sanatorium repertoire — but few places in Sweden deliver it on this scale.

What makes Sandträsk distinctive is not only its size but its silence. Buildings like this were intended for people who knew they might not leave. Visitors describe feeling that knowledge first — long before anything actually happens.
