The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas was built between 1867 and 1871 by Michael C. Finney and is today a haunted tourist attraction.

According to legend the house is haunted by the spirit of a young girl who died there. A girl named Sallie is said to have been brought to Dr Finney by her mother with severe abdominal pain. The doctor gave her anaesthetic and began emergency surgery, believing her appendix was about to burst — but he made the first incision before the anaesthetic had taken effect. As he continued, Sallie screamed in pain and bled to death. There is, however, no physical evidence that any Sallie lived or died at the site, and it has been claimed that the mayor invented the story as a publicity stunt to draw visitors to the town.

The paranormal activity that made the Sallie House famous began in 1993, when Tony Pickman and his wife Debra moved in. It particularly affected male residents and visitors, some of whom claimed to have been scratched until they bled — earning Sallie the nickname "the man-hating spirit". The spirits in the house — believed to be more than just little Sallie — physically attacked the husband and set fires. Witnesses describe scratch marks, burns, sensations of choking, shadow figures, growls and a constant feeling of being watched. Since 2022 the house has been open for tours and overnight stays.
