The Hotel Monte Palace on São Miguel in the Azores opened in 1989 as the island's first five-star hotel, enthroned at the Vista do Rei viewpoint above the famous crater lakes of Sete Cidades. It went bankrupt after just 18 months, and since the guards left in 2011 the colossus has been stripped and left to decay. Visitors report shadows moving behind the empty windows and lights flickering inside even though the power was cut long ago – many believe former guests and staff still linger. The ruin has become a cult destination for urban explorers and ghost enthusiasts alike.
