The Palácio-Convento de Mafra is one of Europe's largest Baroque complexes, built in the 18th century by King João V with tens of thousands of labourers – many of whom lost their lives in the brutal work. Their spirits are said never to have left the endless corridors, and over the years guards have told of footsteps and figures at night, including a headless captain. Around the walled-up tunnels beneath the complex, legends also thrive of pale rats the size of rabbits. The palace is today a World Heritage site and perfectly possible to visit – in daylight.
