The magnate palace of Łańcut is one of Poland's most splendid residences, but its darkest figure is Stanisław Stadnicki (1551–1610), the lord known as "Diabeł Łańcucki" – the Devil of Łańcut. He plundered, murdered and tortured in private feuds until he was cut down fleeing after the battle of Tarnawiec, and his contemporaries were convinced he had sold his soul. Though today's palace was built after his death, his terrifying ghost is said to roam the corridors, alongside two gentler spirits: the Blue Lady and the White Lady. The palace is now a museum with a famous carriage collection.
