The medieval royal castle of Będzin is haunted, tradition says, by its notorious burgrave, the 15th-century knight Mikołaj Kornicz Siestrzeniec, infamous for robbery, kidnapping and treason. Legend has it that he threw himself from the castle tower when he realised the king's punishment awaited, and that his head was buried beneath the walls. At night he is seen wandering with the stolen Sławków chalice under his arm, sometimes accompanied by a White Lady – the spirit of an innocent victim. Around the tower and walls, tales are also told of an enigmatic Black Lady, the castle's other nocturnal figure.
