The Branicki Palace in Białystok, known as the 'Versailles of Podlasie', is one of Poland's most splendid baroque residences. Local legend tells of a mysterious woman in a white dress appearing in the palace gardens on summer nights, drifting between the clipped hedges as though she never left the court. The palace also carries the tale of a secret underground passage to the tower of the town church, built for escape in troubled times. Today the palace houses a medical university – but the gardens' nocturnal guest is said to return still.
