The mound on Lasota hill rises sixteen metres above Podgorze and is probably older than our era; nobody knows for certain who raised it or why. The tradition is unambiguous: this is the grave of Krak, founder of the city and the man who rid Krakow of the dragon. When the mound was finished, the legend says, a huge funeral feast was held, and eggs and bread were thrown from the summit down to the poor waiting below. Out of that grew Rekawka, still held on the Tuesday after Easter at the foot of the mound, a spring rite for the dead older than the little church beside it and never entirely absorbed by the church. At sunrise on the same morning the mound lines up with Wanda's mound across the Vistula, which folk belief reads as a calendar built out of graves.
