The Pirates House in Savannah, Georgia is a tavern built in 1794 — some sources give a date as early as 1753 for an inn for seafarers. It is rumoured to be the oldest building in the whole state of Georgia. Pirates and sailors came here for a drink, and the place quickly became the district's hottest spot for beer and brawling.

From the rum cellar an airless tunnel runs out towards River Street, once used to carry off unsuspecting men. Many came into the bar for a beer or two and woke aboard a ship hundreds of miles from the coast — victims of "shanghaiing", which turned countless men into conscripted sailors.

The author Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have visited the building and drawn inspiration for Treasure Island (1883). According to legend, Captain Flint's life ended in Savannah, perhaps even in the very inn that inspired Stevenson's character.

The staff describe eerie presences and encounters with the spirits of sailors. Heavy booted footsteps have been heard moving through the building after closing, and screams have been reported from the boarded-up tunnels beneath the house. Glasses and bottles have been thrown from the shelves by unseen forces, shadow figures walk the dining rooms, and footsteps echo across the wooden floors — one of Savannah's most haunted places.
