The house at Hidalgo 43 in San Ángel dates from the seventeenth century and counts as the oldest private dwelling in the district. Here, the legend says, lived Guiomar, daughter of the Counts of Oploca, betrothed to don Lope, a knight in the service of the Spanish crown who sailed for Peru. He swore never to forget her and to think of her at that very window on every moonlit night. Guiomar died at the window, still waiting. When don Lope at last returned and idly touched the grille, a skeletal hand seized him and a voice reproached him for the broken promise. Next morning neighbours found his body clinging to the ironwork. At full moon a knocking is said to sound against the same grille.
