The devil as a black dog

The most frightening figure at Mörby is the devil himself — or at least one of his forms. He appears as a large black dog with glowing eyes. It is said that anyone who sees the dog will soon be struck by serious illness or misfortune. Many visitors have felt an uncomfortable presence at dusk, and some have even heard deep growling in the dark — yet on turning round, no dog was there.

The White Lady

The White Lady was a beautiful young woman who tried to flee the castle with her lover, a fiddler. They were discovered, and in the panicked escape the fiddler drowned in a dark lake near the ruin. Every Thursday evening the White Lady is said to move through the old church hall, searching for her lost love. Some have seen her as a pale figure in the moonlight; others have heard sorrowful sighs echo between the fallen walls.

The Blue Maiden

The Blue Maiden is a figure sometimes seen in one of the watchtowers. Her sorrowful, remorseful gaze speaks of a tragic history. She was an eastern princess abducted to the castle by the cruel knight Myre. His love turned to jealousy, and in a fit of rage he took her life. But the knight repented so deeply that he left his old life behind and entered a monastery.

The monk

The monastic figure glimpsed among the ruins is believed to be the knight Myre himself. He tried to atone for his sins by living in a monastery, but it was not enough. His soul appears to walk the ruins still, perhaps seeking forgiveness — or protecting the place from other sinners.

The woman in black

Mörby seems cursed by unhappy love stories. The woman in black is another soul who found no rest. Her history is obscure, but she is said to have been betrayed by her beloved and never to have recovered from the grief. Now she walks the ruins, forever searching for something — or someone — she never had.
