The pedestrian underpass beneath Stefan cel Mare boulevard at Ismail street, next to the UNIC department store in central Chisinau, carries one of the city's eeriest everyday legends. A little girl is said to have drowned here when the tunnel flooded. Night watchmen tell of a child's laughter echoing in its corners after midnight, and of small wet barefoot prints found on the tiled floor in the mornings.
