The witches of Triora were said to gather at La Cabotina, a poor ruined quarter on the village edge where solitary women, herbalists and midwives lived. It is there the spirits are said to linger: locals say strange sounds are heard by the ruins at night, and visitors describe an oppressive atmosphere in the dark alleys around them.

The mountain village in the Argentina valley is called the Salem of Italy. Between 1587 and 1589 it hosted the country's largest witch trial: some thirty women were accused of causing the famine, tortured into confession, and several died in prison — among them the noblewoman Isotta Stella. The village has since embraced its inheritance with a witchcraft museum, a witch festival in August and a Halloween celebration that draws thousands.
