The sacristy of the church of Sacro Cuore del Suffragio on the banks of the Tiber holds one of the world's strangest museums. It was founded after a fire swept the church's chapel in 1897 and the priest Victor Jouet believed he saw a suffering face burned into the wall – a sign, he claimed, from the souls in purgatory. Jouet then travelled across Europe collecting objects on which the dead are said to have left scorch marks begging the living for prayers: handprints seared into prayer books, nightshirts and wooden boards. Among the items are the three fingerprints that the deceased Palmira Rastelli allegedly burned into a friend's prayer book in 1871.
