The fortified manor of Sorci outside Anghiari was home to the mercenary captain Baldaccio Bruni and his wife Annalena Malatesta. In 1441 Baldaccio was lured into an ambush in Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, cut down, beheaded and thrown into Piazza della Signoria before the crowd. His vengeful spirit is said to have returned home to Sorci, where guests and staff have long reported the clank of armoured footsteps in the dead of night and slamming doors. Today the castle houses a famous country inn, and the ghost has become the establishment's pride.
