The venerable Savoy Hotel in Mussoorie became the scene of an unsolved murder mystery in 1911. Spiritualist Frances Garnett-Orme was found dead behind a locked door, poisoned with prussic acid slipped into her medicine bottle. Her companion and séance partner stood trial but was acquitted, and shortly afterwards Garnett-Orme's doctor also died – of strychnine. The case, passed along by Rudyard Kipling, is said to have inspired Agatha Christie's debut mystery. Guests have since described a serene woman in white drifting through corridors and across the roof, and doors opening on their own – as if she is still hunting for her murderer.
