Nohkalikai near Cherrapunji plunges more than three hundred metres straight into a turquoise pool, and its name roughly means 'the leap of Likai'. In Khasi legend, the widow Likai remarried a man who, in jealousy, killed her little daughter and cooked her flesh into a meal; when Likai realised what she had eaten, she ran in madness over the cliff edge. Ever since, her wailing is said to echo within the roar of the falls, and many locals find the place heavy with grief rather than beauty. In mist and at dusk, visitors tell of a woman's figure glimpsed at the brink.
