The Sun Temple at Konark, built in the 13th century as a colossal stone chariot for the sun god Surya, carries more than World Heritage status. Legend has it that its twelve hundred artisans could not set the temple's crowning stone, and only when twelve-year-old Dharmapada, the chief architect's son, solved the riddle was the work completed – whereupon the boy threw himself into the sea to save the artisans' honour. Night watchmen and villagers tell of a temple dancer killed by a jealous rival who is still said to dance among the ruins after dark. Many visitors describe a heaviness in the dusk air around the temple, as if the stones themselves remembered.
