The roads through Delhi's old military cantonment are lined with dense woodland and are notoriously empty at night. For decades, drivers and night workers have told of a middle-aged woman in a white sari who suddenly appears at the roadside between one and four in the morning, asking for a lift. Those who drive on claim to see her keeping pace with the car at unnatural speed, sometimes reappearing further up the road. Legend says she is a woman who died on this very stretch. Sceptics point to night-time illusions and mistaken identity, but the story remains one of Delhi's most retold.
