Ross Castle on Lough Leane in Killarney was the seat of the O'Donoghue clan, and around the chieftain O'Donoghue Mór has grown one of Ireland's loveliest lake legends. He is said not to have died but to have sunk through the castle window into the depths, where he lives on in a splendid palace beneath the water. Every seventh year, at dawn on May Day, he rides up out of the waves on a white horse surrounded by a retinue of spirits, and anyone who catches a glimpse of him is promised good fortune for the rest of their life. The rock of Rough Point in the lake is pointed out as the place where his shimmering host passes by.
