The ruin on Montpelier Hill above Dublin was built in 1725 as a hunting lodge for Speaker William Conolly — using stones from an ancient passage-tomb cairn, which by tradition cursed the house from the start. When the roof blew off, it was said to be the devil's doing. Here the notorious Hellfire Club held its debauched gatherings, and in the most famous tale a player dropped a card beneath the table and saw that the unknown guest had cloven hooves; the stranger vanished in a flash of fire. Stories of a black cat of unnatural size, scorched figures and an oppressive sense of evil have clung to the place ever since, and night walkers still report sudden dread inside the ruin.
