Beneath the lawn of Wolfe Tone Square lies the old burial ground of St Mary's, one of the most crowded graveyards in Dublin. Here in 1831 was buried John Toler, Earl of Norbury, the judge known as the hanging judge and reckoned the most corrupt in Irish legal history. Tradition holds that he had a young man hanged for stealing sheep, and that the man's widow died of grief — but not before she cursed the judge never to rest. Ever since, people in Cabra, where Norbury kept his house, have heard the sound of chains dragging along the road toward the graveyard. In Cabra he is also said to show himself as a great black hound. The graveyard closed in the nineteenth century and became a park, but the burials remain under the grass and the stones stand by the wall.
