The Casablanca tunnel in central Jakarta was driven straight through land belonging to the old Menteng Pulo cemetery in the 1990s, and many graves had to be relocated in haste. Ever since, the spirits of the old graves are said never to have found peace. Most feared is the "red kuntilanak", a female figure in a red dress whose colour is said to embody her rage, along with a woman in white who appears in the middle of the roadway on certain nights. Among Jakarta's drivers an unwritten rule endures: honk three times before entering, as a polite greeting to the tunnel's unseen residents.
