The Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, outside San Diego, is one of California's most iconic hotels — and haunted by Kate Morgan.

Kate Morgan was 24 when she checked into room 3327 (then room 302) at Thanksgiving in 1892. After five days alone she took her own life. Once her identity was confirmed — she was married but separated from her husband — it was assumed she had come to the hotel hoping to meet a lover who never appeared.

Ever since, the hauntings have centred on her former guest room on the third floor. Visitors describe flickering lights, a television that switches itself on and off, gusts of air from nowhere, unexplained smells and sounds, objects that move, doors that open and close, sudden drops in temperature, and footsteps and voices without a source. Some guests say they have felt fingertips brush their cheek in their sleep, or seen Kate's initials appear on the ceiling.

The story of Kate Morgan continues to fascinate, and her room is the most requested in the entire hotel. In the hotel's shops and corridors too, staff and guests have described cold spots and objects falling from shelves without explanation. Independent paranormal investigators have used infrared cameras, night vision and other equipment to document what they hold to be supernatural activity in the beautiful white beachfront hotel on the Pacific — which is also one of the country's largest wooden buildings.
