Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, London. Construction began in 1514 under Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, but in 1529 it was taken over by King Henry VIII when Wolsey fell from favour. The palace became one of Henry's favourite residences.

A figure was captured on CCTV near Hampton Court Palace in October 2003 — dressed in a long, cloak-like coat, and said to have haunted the site for some days or months.

One of the best-known accounts concerns Sybil Penn, the Grey Lady. Her monument was moved when the church was rebuilt in 1829, which gave rise to the ghost story. It was said that the sound of a spinning wheel was heard near Hampton Court, and that the Board of Works shortly afterwards found a sealed room containing exactly such a wheel. Sybil Penn was an English lady of the court — nurse and teacher to Edward VI, and lady-in-waiting to his sisters Mary I and Elizabeth I.

The most dramatic haunting is said to be the "haunted gallery", where Catherine Howard — Henry VIII's fifth wife — was dragged screaming after being arrested for adultery in 1541. She is said to still be heard weeping when the moon is full.

Hampton Court Palace is listed among Britain's reportedly haunted places and is today one of England's most visited historic attractions.
