Görväln Castle — the forest woman and the stain that will not lift
Görväln Castle stands on the shore of Lake Mälaren in Järfälla, north-west of Stockholm. The building is today a comfortable hotel, but its long history and many changes of ownership have left traces reaching from the Middle Ages to modern times. The site is mentioned as early as the fifteenth-century land registers, when the estate consisted of two farms. In the 1500s the property fell to the Crown, but Johan III later granted it to an Italian nobleman. In the 1650s Elsa Elisabeth Brahe took it over and had the costly stone house built that became the present main building — work carried out between 1659 and 1661, and completed around 1675.
A Crown estate and an aristocratic retreat
After the Brahe era came a succession of owners; names such as de la Vallée, Sparre and Witte recur in the lists of proprietors. In the 1700s the castle passed to Eva Bielke and later to Pehr Carlsköld. During the 1800s the buildings fell into decay, but the park with its avenues and terraces developed into an arboretum with more than 150 species of tree. In the early 1900s the estate was owned by the Carlsköld family, but in 1963 Järfälla municipality bought the castle and had it restored into today's conference hotel and restaurant. Public ownership has meant that the park, with its trees and modern sculptures, is open to all.
The forest woman
According to popular tradition, Görväln is rich not only in history but in supernatural detail. Local legend speaks of Skogsfrun, the forest woman, a white-clad figure said to roam the paths in the surrounding woods. She is described as a kind of nature spirit guarding the boundary between the park and the forest. Children playing by "the forest woman's path" are said to have had their toys destroyed by an unseen hand; adults are said to have fallen ill after feeling her cold touch. She can also appear as a glowing orb hovering over the meadows — a description resembling older accounts of will-o'-the-wisps.
Stains, brides and footsteps
Many of the ghost stories are connected to misfortunes that struck the estate. One account concerns a dark red wine stain on the kitchen floor — a mark that cannot be scrubbed away — said to remain after a dramatic death in a duel over jealousy. Others mention a sorrowful bride sometimes glimpsed in the castle's white salon; she is said to have died of a broken heart after her intended fell in war.
More accounts begin in the nineteenth-century wing. Guests describe unexplained footsteps, faint knocking and the sense of being watched. According to an old anecdote, a cleaner saw a translucent child playing with a ball in front of the open fireplace. When she looked away the child was gone, but the ball kept rolling by itself.
